  • Ah, yes... zealots are always great fun. The sheer desperation of their responses suggests that they believe that if one person prefers anything to the Apple experience, their very validity as a human being is somehow diminished, or even negated.

    I think the crux of the matter is here:

    More importantly, the open source software I want to use (vim, emacs, firefox, thunderbird, gaim, the gimp, etc) are all first class citizens on Linux.If you prefer vim and emacs to, say, BBEdit and SubEthaEdit, Firefox to Safari, Thunderbird to Mail, gaim to iChat, the GIMP to PhotoShop, and so on, then of course you'll prefer a Linux or Windows PC to a Mac. And reasonable, sane people can have such preferences. I don't, so I prefer a Mac, but that's just me.
